SALLY L. NEEL
Artistic Director

A running joke in Director Sally Logee Neel's family is that her mother went into labor with her while at choir practice and that Sally has been in some sort of choir rehearsal ever since!
Born and reared in Texas, Sally began piano studies at the age of four when her parents (themselves musicians) realized their precocious little redhead could pick out tunes on the piano by ear. As a high school sophomore, every day after school, she would walk to a local Episcopal church where she studied with the church's organist, and practiced. It was during this period that she realized her calling to become a church musician.
After high school, Sally was accepted by Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, where she studied organ with Mr. Emmet Smith (not of Dallas Cowboy fame). On a European Organ Study Tour in 1973, she played for (among others) Jean Langlais and Maurice Durufle. While at TCU, she served as interim (and later assistant) organist/choir director at Trinity Episcopal Church in Fort Worth. In 1976, upon completion of studies at TCU, she became organist/choir director at First Christian Church in Breckenridge, Texas. She also directed the citywide girl's handbell choir.
In 1978, Sally became organist/assistant director of music and youth at First United Methodist Church in Bartlesville, OK. She played quite a number of organ recitals during that period, including one for the American Guild of Organist Regional Convention held in Fort Worth, Texas.
In 1980, she was called to be organist/choir director at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Dallas where she built a choir program for adults and children. There, she composed anthems and service music including a children's choral Christmas anthem, "'Twas in the Moon of Wintertime” published by Choristers Guild.
For seven years, Sally was a member of the Dallas Symphony Chorus (under the direction of Ronald Shirey) and served as organist on their European concert tour in honor of J. S. Bach's 200th birthday, which concluded with a concert at Bach's church, St. Thomas Church, in Leipzig, Germany.
In 1987, she became organist/choir director of St. James Episcopal Church in Conroe, Texas and accompanist for the McCullough High School concert choir in The Woodlands. She was also music instructor at the church's pre-school.
In 1989, she and husband Doug married and moved to Dallas. In 1993, she became an assistant organist and choral director at The Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration in Dallas, where she taught children's choirs.
In 2000, the Neal family moved to Rockwall, TX where Doug served as rector of Holy Trinity by the Lake Episcopal Church. During the next four years, she spent her time as a clergy wife and mother, serving as substitute organist at various churches. Her primary musical outlet during that time was singing with Orpheus Chamber Singers (under the direction of Donald Krehbiel), a professional choral group that has received high acclaim from arts critics.
In the Summer of 2004, Sally came to The Episcopal Church of the Annunciation in Lewisville as an interim organist and has been there ever since. In the Summer of 2006, she accepted the position of Artistic Director of Musical Feast Choral Society.
Sally's family is exceptionally musical. Both her parents were avid Methodist church choir members. Her dad is a trained and talented tenor, an amateur composer and choral conductor, and has himself been an interim church choir director on many occasions. Her mother taught nursing at Paris Junior College and, as an amateur artist, designed and created many gorgeous church banners for their church. All of Sally's siblings are musically talented and all have produced very artistic children. A niece and nephew both hold masters degrees in music. Husband Doug also plays trumpet, and the couple has a brilliant and very lovable son, Robert, a budding pianist and vocalist.
Sally currently serves as Director of Advancement at The Fulton School in Heath, where she is responsible for public relations work, recruitment, and fund raising.
